Indiana Inmates Challenge Ban on Sexually Explicit MaterialTwo inmates have challenged a new policy that bans printed material containing nudity or sexual content from Indiana prisons.The class-action lawsuit, filed July 11 in U.S. District Court in Indianapolis, says the policy, which went into effect July 1, could prohibit materials ranging from sexually explicit letters to daily newspapers, as well as some bestselling novels, such as those by Jackie Collins, previously available through the prison library, the Associated Press reported July 12. “The policy is written so broadly that it includes within its prohibitions such things as personal letters between prisoners and loved ones and much of the world’s great literature and art,” said the complaint, which was prepared by the American Civil Liberties Union of Indiana. The complaint says that the two plaintiffs, Ernest Tope and Wade Meisberger, challenged the policy through the prison grievance system without success. Indiana Department of Correction spokeswoman Java Ahmed told the AP that officials had not yet reviewed the lawsuit and had no comment. Posted July 14, 2006. |
