LC to Support Preservation of Foreign News Broadcasts

The Library of Congress has entered a cooperative agreement to ensure the preservation of high-interest foreign news broadcasts such as those from the Arabic-language television channel Al Jazeerah.

Under the agreement, SCOLA, a nonprofit educational organization that receives and retransmits television programming from some 90 countries, will archive a minimum of 3,750 hours of programming in digital form over a six-month period and make the material available to LC and its researchers. Among the broadcasts likely to be included are those from from Pakistan, Russia, and the Philippines.

The library is providing funding support through its National Digital Information Infrastructure and Preservation Program, which focuses on the long-term preservation of important historic and cultural digital materials that have no analog equivalent. SCOLA will match the $250,000 provided by LC. The initial six-month agreement, subject to continuing matching contributions from SCOLA, is renewable up to four years.
