Hampden Library Gets Funds to ReopenA year after closing its doors due to the failure of a property-tax override, Hampden (Mass.) Free Public Library will reopen for 25 hours per week as of July 1.Voters at the annual town meeting in April approved $70,000 for the library’s 2006–07 budget, according to the June 21 Springfield Republican, $30,000 less than the library’s last fiscal year prior to its June 30, 2005, closure. Hampden officials have hired Carol Scheier, formerly manager of the East Springfield branch of Springfield City Library, as director. Former Hampden director Ellen Bump has taken another job, although she has been doing volunteer work to help the library reopen. Two other staffers, Youth Services Librarian Christina Fairman and Technical Services Librarian Cynthia Rowley, will return to the library. Since the Hampden Free Public Library closed, its Friends group has been filling the gap by holding monthly book swaps. Posted June 23, 2006. |
