Scranton Trustees Restrict R-Rated Movie Loans

The Scranton (Pa.) Public Library Board unanimously approved a policy March 30 to restrict R-rated movie loans to youths 17 and under unless a parent or guardian has given written permission.

The policy, which was recommended by the board’s legal committee, came about after a librarian brought up the fact that the library lacked one. “It’s not based on a complaint, just a hypothetical, just that it could happen,” explained library Director Jack Finnerty in the March 30 Scranton Times-Tribune.

The change affects only the Albright Memorial Library and the Children’s Library in the Lackawanna County Library System, the Times-Tribune reported March 31. Finnerty said he wasn’t aware of similar policies at any of the other seven county libraries, but Abington Community Library Director Leah Rudolph noted that Abington would likely do whatever the Albright library did, since the county libraries all use the same card system.
