Longtime Librarian Mary Jane Anderson DiesMary Jane Anderson, former library director and longtime American Library Association Council member, died May 23 in Coralville, Iowa, following a battle with cancer. She was 71.In a lengthy career that began as an elementary school librarian in Miami in 1957, Anderson worked in school and public libraries in Florida, Maryland, Illinois, and Michigan. Most recently, she served as director of the Maud Preston Palenkse Memorial Library in St. Joseph, Michigan, from 1998–1999 before becoming a library consultant. She also taught in the library education program at Rosary College (now Dominican University) in River Forest, Illinois. From 1974 to 1982 she was executive director of the ALA’s Association for Library Service to Children. Before that, she served as editor of the division’s journal, Top of the News from 1971 to 1974. Anderson maintained an interest in global librarianship, attending several meetings of the International Board on Books for Young People and the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions. She was a member of a delegation of U.S. library leaders that visited the Soviet Union in the early 1980s. Posted May 24, 2006. |
