Naperville Cites Incompatibility with Fingerprint ID SystemThe Naperville (Ill.) Public Library has discontinued its project to install fingerprint scanners as a way for patrons to login on its public internet computers. The library had signed a $40,646 contract in May 2005 with the Naperville-based U.S. Biometrics firm to add the technology during the summer, but the company encountered difficulties interfacing its AccessQ system with NPL’s Dynix patron-authentication database.“We had committed a considerable amount of staff time to the project, but last December it became clear to us that it just wasn’t working,” NPL Deputy Director Susan Strunk told American Libraries. “Since then, we have been in discussions with U.S. Biometrics in resolving contract issues, and this week they agreed to return $22,000 of the amount to us, which we think was equitable.” Strunk said the multiple layers of security in the library’s database added some complexity to the company’s installation methods, which are tailored for banks and stores. “In a way we were a test site for them as a library, and I think we both learned something in the process,” she added.
