Sprinklers Were Recommended for University of New Mexico in 2002

A consultant recommended fire-suppression systems four years ago for the University of New Mexico’s Zimmerman Library, which suffered serious damage from an April 30 blaze.

Sprinklers were among many recommendations in the 97-page UNM General Library Preservation Assessment, which was completed in 2002 by University of Utah Preservation Librarian Randy Silverman. “When the report first came out, we began discussions, but it wasn’t viewed by the university as a top priority,” Associate Library Dean Fran Wilkinson said in a May 24 report by CBS affiliate KRQE-TV in Albuquerque.

The cause of the fire is still unknown. KQRE reported that UNM told its insurance carrier to set aside $5 million for recovery from the damage.
