ALA and AASL: Assuring Quality in School Library Media Education Programs
For school library media specialists, the master's degree from a program accredited by ALA or a master's degree with a specialty in school library media from an educational unit accredited by National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) is the appropriate first professional degree.
The American Association of School Librarians (AASL) works with educators and practitioners from the school library media community to conduct reviews of school library media specialist programs in cooperation with NCATE. Through this review process, ALA/AASL has the opportunity to influence not only the pre-service education of the majority of library media specialists who are educated in non-ALA accredited programs, but also to help teachers and administrators develop appropriate expectations for library media specialists in Information Age schools.
AASL Program Reviews
AASL only recognizes master's programs. There are two routes to AASL-recognition:
1) AASL Program Review : Program reviews are performed semi-annually in the spring (program report is due 9/15) and in the fall (program report is due 2/1) as a part of NCATE's unit accreditation process. The program review process is explained on NCATE's web site.
2) State Standards Review: NCATE has partnership agreements with certain states that allow the state to perform a program review using AASL standards and confer AASL recognition. To see your state's partnership agreement, see "NCATE and the States ."
